For ages, music artists have been inspired by visual art to create songs that are almost as famous as the paintings themselves. Nat King Cole sang to Mona Lisa, Don McLean’s Starry Starry Night paid tribute to Vincent Van Gogh, Coldplay’s 2008 album Viva la Vida swore allegiance to Frida Kahlo, and countless classical composers have been inspired by the famous works of Botticelli, Hogarth, and Hokusai.

In 2021, the Arts on the Coast Annual Exhibit (June 24 - September 11) turns the tables with Southbound, an art show that visually celebrates Georgia’s vibrant and diverse musical heritage. Each participating artist opened their minds and unleashed their talents to be inspired by music performed, arranged, written, composed, produced, and/or created by a music artist from Georgia.

“Every year we collaborate with the Arts on the Coast to establish a theme for the show. It keeps the show fresh and exciting, but it also challenges the artists and their creativity,” says Photopoint Gallery Owner and Director, Joy Dunigan. “This ensures that the Annual Exhibit is a very special show, everytime.”

“We created a playlist that includes music by The Allman Brothers, Ray Charles, the legendary songwriter Johnny Mercer, the B-52s, TLC, James Brown and Trisha Yearwood as well as notable others. Artists are always listening to music in their studios. It helps stimulate the senses and brings out the best creativity so in essence, this show is an extension of that process. The result has culminated on the walls of the Photopoint Gallery.”

Southbound officially opened on June 24th, and runs through September 11th. This is the sixth consecutive year that the Arts on the Coast has partnered with the Photopoint Gallery (located inside Elmgren’s Garden Center) in Richmond Hill, Georgia, to host its crown-jewel of yearly art exhibits.

“The Annual Exhibit is our one and only juried art show each year, and everyone gets really excited about it,” says Sarah Volker, President of Arts on the Coast. “Not only do we look to a three-person jury that awards cash prizes, but we also engage the entire Richmond Hill community to help us name a ‘People’s Choice’ winner. We cordially invite everyone to come out and see the show.”

This event marks the midpoint in the Arts on the Coast 2021 calendar. Regular ArtNite events will be taking place on July 23rd, and again on October 22nd. A Fall Pop-Up Art Show is currently scheduled for November 13th at the Arts on the Coast Gallery, located inside the Richmond Hill Visitors Center.
